Toluene + SeO2 + H2SO4 -> brown violet reaction product
Cross Sensitivity
Xylenes are indicated with approximately the same sensitivity, but with a bluish violet color. Benzene discolors the entire indicating layer a diffuse
yellow brown. Petroleum hydrocarbons discolor the entire indicating layer a diffuse reddish brown. Methanol, ethanol, acetone and ethyl acetate do not
interfere in the range of their TLVs.
